4.5.2 Minimum Criteria for Sexual Assault Evidence Collection Kits

To ensure that the Sexual Assault Evidence Collection Kits will be admissible as evidence in a court of law, be sure that they have the following:

  1. Uniform kit packaging (e.g. a box or an envelope) to increase the efficiency of proper storage, tracking and retrieval;

  2. A unique identifier;

  3. Discreet labelling to protect survivor privacy;

  4. Identification for the type of kit collected (survivor or suspected perpetrator);

  5. Standard medical forensic documents;

  6. Standard labelling for the sample envelopes; and

  7. Standard collection materials (e.g. swabs, envelopes, etc.).
