4.5.1 Materials

The following materials are standard in a Sexual Assault Evidence Collection Kit (most of them should be locally available through pharmacies or wholesale medical supply shops):

  1. Sexual assault evidence collection kit instructions;

  2. Personal protection equipment (gloves);

  3. Cotton-tipped swabs with wooden sticks;

  4. A stable stand for swabs to air-dry;

  5. A slide stand;

  6. Slide labels;

  7. Red stickers;

  8. A permanent black marker;

  9. A black, ink pen;

  10. A large white envelope;

  11. A blood standard envelope;

  12. A head hair standard envelope;

  13. An oral swabs envelope;

  14. Miscellaneous envelopes;

  15. A pubic hair combings and comb envelopes;

  16. An anal swab envelope;

  17. A vaginal swabs envelope;

  18. A cervical swabs envelope;

  19. A male genitalia swabs envelope;

  20. A table sheet for the patient during the internal exam;

  21. Extra envelopes;

  22. Pre-labeled brown bag;

  23. A floor sheet;

  24. A floor sheet bag;

  25. A table sheet;

  26. A table sheet bag;

  27. Two paper sheets;

  28. A pubic hair comb;

  29. Sterile water;

  30. A stapler;

  31. Tape;

  32. An alternate light source or woods lamp;

  33. Bags for undergarments and clothing;

  34. Exam and evidence collection checklists;

  35. A sexual assault history form; and

  36. A camera.

Label the envelopes, and ensure all the forms and instructions are clearly printed. Assemble all the materials into a small box, and seal the box, marking as detailed below.
