1.6.1 Non-Physical Contact Sexual Violence

Although most of the time we think that sexual violence is about contact, there are far more non-contact examples of sexual violence.

Examples of non-physical contact sexual violence include:

  1. Verbal comments about private parts of the body,

  2. Sexual rumors and name-calling,

  3. Making sexual requests or jokes,

  4. Whistling and catcalling,

  5. Sexual gestures,

  6. Peeping, and

  7. Flashing or leering at someone.

It may also include writing, such as texting, posting comments online, or sending photos or videos.

Someone in a position of power may offer something in exchange for sexual behaviors, and this is guilty of non-touching sexual violence.
