5.5.1 Self-Care after Trauma

Before the survivor leaves the health center, it’s valuable to speak with them about self-care in the days and weeks to come.

Self-care is about taking steps to feel healthy and comfortable and can help the survivor to cope with the short and long-term effects of trauma from sexual assault.

After experiencing trauma, it’s important for the survivor to make a plan and take steps to keep their body healthy and strong. They may be healing from injuries or feel emotionally exhausted. Healthy behaviors can support them during this time.

Self-care practices are different for everyone, so encourage the survivor to explore what works for them.
