4.4.2.12 Male Genitalia Swabs

If the patient is male, collect penile, scrotum and urethral swabs.

The examiner will swab the primary source of potential foreign DNA. This may include the penile shaft, glans, scrotum and urethral opening.

Re-label the cervical/vaginal envelope to read ‘Male Genitalia Swabs’. Use the swabs that are in that envelope.

Do one swab at a time. Use the entire surface of each cotton-tipped swab to maximize the sample collected.

Mark the first swab obtained with a black marker on the distal wooden portion of the swab stick.

Place the four penile swabs in a stable stand, and let them air-dry. Once dried, place all four swabs into the pre-labeled ‘Male Genitalia Swabs’ envelope.
